<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I am currently reading the book "Science Workshop Reading, Writing and Thinking Like a Scientist" By Wendy Saul in hopes to prepare for using in my classroom in the fall and teaching with the new NGSS Standards. Has your school switched over yet? Where are you in the process? We spent a lot of time on Marzano's Scales this year, and we've adjusted what we're teaching in each grade level. Next year for me I'll have some of the same curriculum and some new things.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Reading the first chapter of this book, gave me a lot of great hope. The book puts emphasis on what a teacher does know about science and the scientific process vs what they do not know. As science teachers I think we often assume that we need to know it all, this book focuses on looking at science through a lens of scientific processes and giving that perspective to students. It's okay to start with what's in front of you vs. what you do not know, engaging in the same process that students do and take the time to reflect or "upack" what you've learned. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
</script>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
With that thought in mind there are three elements of Science Workshop:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>1. Science Workshop is authentic to the thinking of a scientist:</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Think about how do scientist ask questions?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
-Explore Phenomena</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Speculate about why certain things happen</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
-Arrive at convincing and reasonable answers</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
-Look at content</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Students help to determine the path of learning and inquiry</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>2. Science Workshop has autonomy</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
SOP's (Standard Operating Procedures)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- how will I go about my work?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- who do I work with?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- how do I know if I'm good a my job?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- what do I do next?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Think about the purpose</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- help students become more adept at learning on their own</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- "Students are more able to engage in sustained and focused thought."</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Think about the time use (combine subjects)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- students benefit from doing things over and over... repeat standards in multiple subjects</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>3. Science Workshop creates community</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- teachers and students work together as a community of thinkers</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- teachers and children need to be aware of resources available in each other</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- results are presented and evaluated by peers</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- cooperative learning strategies are used</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- make time for sharing and celebration time. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Creating a workshop environment allows students to classify evidence, generate questions and answers and face challenges of science without fear.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Do you have science workshop in your classroom?... what kind of elements are a must in your science workshop? Are there things you think need to be added to the list above? Let me know in the comments below. </div>

In my classroom I have 12 work stations each with 4 desks. In the middle of each station is the caddy with all the supplies.<br />
<br />
Each caddy is numbered and all of the supplies in it have that same number.<br />
<br />
The caddy contains 4 rulers, 2 Calculators, 4 pencils, 4 pairs of <a href="https://www.dollartree.com/All-Purpose-Scissors-8-/p321480/index.pro">scissors</a>, 1 <a href="https://www.dollartree.com/3M-Scotch-Transparent-Tape-2-ct-Packs/p10980/index.pro">tape</a>, 1 <a href="https://www.dollartree.com/Mini-Staplers-with-500-Staples/p322646/index.pro">stapler</a>, 1 box of crayons, 2 CD's, 4 dry erase markers, 12 colored pencils, bottle or glue, and 11 colorful ink pens. Outside the caddy is a glue sponge, a tidy tub and 4 white boards. Clipped to the top of the caddy is a station number. (I've linked some of these supplies to the <a href="https://www.dollartree.com/">Dollar Tree</a> because it's a great place to get items in bulk)<br />

★ <a href="http://www.teachjunkie.com/organization/glue-sponges-tutorial/?utm_content=bufferd1718&utm_medium=social&utm_source=pinterest.com&utm_campaign=buffer">Teach Junkie</a> has collected all the Glue Sponge Tutorials you'd want. Again I got my items for this at the dollar store. This has save me so much even with my 7th graders - and they love them.<br />
<br />
<br />
★ <a href="http://everydaywiththejays.blogspot.com/2012/08/teach-pom-dry-erase-markers.html">Everyday with the Jays</a> has a nice tutorial on putting pom-poms on the dry erase markers. This saved me a step and an extra supply in the caddy. They do need to be replace every so often though, depending on how much you use your dry erase boards in class. P.S. My dry erase boards are shower board cut in to squares from Home Depot.<br />
<br />
★ One of the <b><span style="background-color: black; color: red; font-size: large;">freebies</span></b> I'm offering today through my TpT store is the <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Work-Station-Numbers-2922389">station numbers</a> </span>that I put on the top of the caddies. These have helped me to keep supplies straight... when there is a pen on the floor and it's labeled it's easier to put it back in the correct spot. I've also noticed that when my supplies have traveled that other teachers will bring them back to me as well because they know it belongs to me. <br />
<br />
★ A benefit of these stations has been the colored pens. Students have made their notebooks and classroom work a lot more colorful. This has given opportunity for great note taking, and added bonuses when they need to correct a paper.<br />
<br />
<u>Management</u>:<br />
I do a few things to keep this whole process in check.<br />
<br />
1. I do have a "Supply Monster" come once a week - the kids don't know when, and that table group will get a prize if their supplies are all there, neat and their tidy tub is neat. The second <b><span style="background-color: black; color: red; font-size: large;">freebie</span></b> is a <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Supply-Monsters-2921171">Supply Monster Cards</a></span> that I leave on students desks. I have student exchange the card for a treat; usually a mint, smarter, or pencil. My seventh graders love the supply monster and never let me go a week without awarding a work station. <br />
<br />
2. I also have a poster (picture to come soon) in my classroom so students know what supplies are in the caddies and how they are organized.<br />
<br />
I hope this helps you with your supply management!<br />
Happy Work Stations!<br />

<br />
Our school has just officially embraced standards based grading. We have been using 4-1 (Exceeds, Meets, Partially Meeting, and Does not Meet the standard) for a while, but also gave a corresponding letter grade to go with standards based grades. The letter grades made it so that no one fully embraced "meeting the standard." This year we got rid of the letter grades and are changing the mindset of our students, teachers and community.<br />
<br />
That is a huge task, even if you're on board. <br />
<br />
So I've started slow with the NGSS standards that I am currently teaching. I've use a template of Marzano's scale and the NGSS standard to create an assessment.<br />
<br />
Hope you find this helpful!<br />

<br />
So I love to draw!!! But now I've found a way to take those drawing and incorporate them into my teaching resources digitally. That's AWESOME!<br />
<br />
So, here's what I've been up to:<br />
1. I found this great <span style="color: magenta;"><a href="http://aturntolearn.blogspot.com/2013/05/how-to-make-clipart-from-your-own.html"><span style="color: magenta;">blog</span></a> </span>"A Turn to Learn," which gives you direction in how to turn your drawings into clipart. <br />
2. Drawing! I do this anyway...<br />
So with the combination of the two... I created some <span style="color: magenta;"><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Climb-a-Mountain-Clipart-2640141"><span style="color: magenta;">clipart</span></a>.</span>.. because it's the first (hopefully of many) that I've created I am giving it to you for free.<br />

It's nice to be back after April vacation but it's always the longest week. Before break we were dissecting frogs as a culminating activity on the human body. If you're not sold on dissecting... here are the top 5 reason on why you <b><u>should</u></b> do dissection in your classroom.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLYIWvpHgFIElMbIo3PHk1hwPbtS9nyBJDqygc3FvdzmU7YIMQYrY14OTv3oAlPI3P2fiCjaIYuj0SK-gWJ_y7tEtIhMDiHq2yrRvZR2rtIoYmDqNjNWWybiWcFdnZfRLZUfOmB8NFnW_a/s1600/Screen+Shot+2016-04-27+at+6.45.53+PM.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLYIWvpHgFIElMbIo3PHk1hwPbtS9nyBJDqygc3FvdzmU7YIMQYrY14OTv3oAlPI3P2fiCjaIYuj0SK-gWJ_y7tEtIhMDiHq2yrRvZR2rtIoYmDqNjNWWybiWcFdnZfRLZUfOmB8NFnW_a/s320/Screen+Shot+2016-04-27+at+6.45.53+PM.png" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">#5 Hands-on Learning! </span></b></div>
This is the obvious one... students can apply what they learn about the human body and see it first hand on the frog!<br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></b>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">#4 The Smell! </span></b></div>
I know... I know this one doesn't seem like a reason to convince you! However... if you did any dissection in high school or in the middle school years you remember how horrible the smell was. However, now you can order frogs that are not kept in formaldehyde... so the smell isn't so bad. The activity is worth the minor smell for a few days!<br />

<b><span style="font-size: large;">#3 The Curiosity that Comes Alive!</span></b></div>
My rule for dissection is that students don't have to be the ones to cut, but they do have to observe. I tell them that if they don't want to cut they need to find a willing buddy to do the dissecting part. It's amazing because by the end of class every students is involved and curious about the dissection. This year I used a paper frog first, which generated a ton of curiosity with students. The one I used is from <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Frog-Dissection-1138355">Getting Nerdy with Mel and Gerdy</a>, it was easy and the kids LOVED it! The picture below shows the kids dissecting with their science notebooks open to the paper frog they had made before hand.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZNs4pp0IFAeeqajhmOtyEpeIf4fRG9o1bdTF9gomK6qd8sHtwpWOvl3vQ1anRJ1FJ5rrkzc1JtbfNq5Kd3rUBXmhXAUE7DoOvn9mm1cPhBS6hzfe_n3c3NsTOY-3LwuTOQfRFgRrvWl3M/s1600/Screen+Shot+2016-04-27+at+6.45.42+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZNs4pp0IFAeeqajhmOtyEpeIf4fRG9o1bdTF9gomK6qd8sHtwpWOvl3vQ1anRJ1FJ5rrkzc1JtbfNq5Kd3rUBXmhXAUE7DoOvn9mm1cPhBS6hzfe_n3c3NsTOY-3LwuTOQfRFgRrvWl3M/s320/Screen+Shot+2016-04-27+at+6.45.42+PM.png" width="319" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">#2 This can be done as a large group or in small groups</span></b></div>
There are few lessons where you get to choose large group or small groups and still have every students focus and engaged. In my classroom we are able to get enough frogs so that students can choose to be in groups of two to four. Most of my students picked to be in groups of twos or threes. However, this activity could lend itself to do it as a large group. You could purchase one frog and dissect it under a document camera. I would still allow students that wanted to do the dissecting, that way it still gives them some hands on experience with the frog. Another bonus to whole group means it can still be done even if you don't have funding for every two to three kids to have their own frog.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Frog-Dissection-Organization-2525357"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiARTM8U_rnWspOC4fcm27bYsjEipxsqedGc7Mv0iy6B2uqmuJQ4XVrxAqiBSscVOlhudjjEk8Zq1h0NHta8MUrNlBq5PwoBl2X84CTBODXrpwmR8v5NNuoJTd2JIdXN0gvk0mYEcyBo_SF/s320/Screen+Shot+2016-04-27+at+10.28.35+PM.png" width="248" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">#1 It aligns so well with the Human Body!</span></b></div>
And here is where my freebie comes in... Dissection Organization at it's best! I did two days of dissection and the first day I didn't use this sheet... For the second day I found this idea on <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/source/activebrainscience.com">Pinterest</a>, there was no link just a picture, so I created a sheet my kiddos could use. Check it out in my <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Frog-Dissection-Organization-2525357">TpT Store</a>. It gave the space for the kids to find all of the organs and allowed me to do a quick assessment that they were able to see it all. At the end of the day were were able to do a gallery walk and see everyones dissections and how the organs differed in different sexes, as well as different specimens.<br />
<br />
I am hoping this helps you and that you'll be willing to try dissection in your classroom.<br />
Let me know in the comments if you have any great tips when you're dissecting.<br />

I've been teaching at the Maine School of Science and Mathematics STEM Educator's camp this past week and this is my <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Racing-Through-Physics-2023583">powerpoint</a> from my class.<br />
<br />
This powerpoint includes resources for friction, potential and kinetic energy, Newton's Laws, simple machines and more. Each topic/slide includes multiple resources and videos to use in the classroom.<br />
At the end I've even included a force and motion car building project.<br />

One of the things we are doing to engage our students is to have our students applying their learning. I start with a capacity matrix and end with a project to apply students learning. The first project that my team is doing is a film festival. Students are learning about both science and social studies concepts and have to make a 10 minute film to show their learning. <br />
<br />
I'm not sure if you've used capacity matrix but it's awesome and really allows the learners in my classroom to be independent and direct their learning. It also allows students to each have a different learning path. <a href="https://sites.google.com/a/rsu57.org/rsu-57-learning-targets/learning-target-scales">This school</a> has some example of capacity matrix. In our classroom we are doing it a little different.<br />
<br />
We have four columns: 1. Learning Target (this is what we want the students to be able to do). 2. Input Resources - these are what information the students needs to receive in order to understand a concept. These input resources can be a teacher lesson, a video, a prezi - anything where students are getting the information. 3. Evidence - this is an activity, worksheet or exercise which students are able to practice and improve their skills and show proficiency. With the evidence there is a place for students to correct their work. If students are stuck their should be an opportunity in this column for extra practice. This is also where the teacher can check in and provide mini-lessons for students that are stuck. 4. The last column is the check in. This is a mini "quiz" where students are showing that they have mastered the skill. Students do this and then check in with the teacher. If their check-in is correct they can move onto the next standard. <br />
<br />
This is part of our capacity matrix for the standards we have in our applied learning project:<br />
(I have taken some of the links off because they are attached to my school google drive for my students) So I would normally have all of these section filled in. This particular matrix has six learning targets.<br />

My teammate and I have decided to leave our doors open all the time and teach teach the entire year! I love it and are kids are amazing! However there are some things about student management that needed some help. Although there are two of us we still wanted to give every student a voice. Another teacher in our building was using a number system with the dry erase board. However that required going up to the board every time you needed to switch the number. I decided to have some fun with PVC pipes and create the system below:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4i-tcG6wq3HI8E_-riqAioo-5M7a_iDk97K442ciet393xbxmjp8vy2jtOnBohsAJOxYu299lb-q11w_iY3hrkg6hiKUSw1XsCspNPrrkNKem0n5Qj4MpnbTQuyCHXrS7xtSsmoQrzNN7/s1600/Screen+Shot+2014-11-22+at+9.33.13+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4i-tcG6wq3HI8E_-riqAioo-5M7a_iDk97K442ciet393xbxmjp8vy2jtOnBohsAJOxYu299lb-q11w_iY3hrkg6hiKUSw1XsCspNPrrkNKem0n5Qj4MpnbTQuyCHXrS7xtSsmoQrzNN7/s1600/Screen+Shot+2014-11-22+at+9.33.13+PM.png" height="200" width="150" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I got the PVC pipe, along with pipe cutters at Lowes Home Improvement Store. The guys at the store were pretty helpful to get the stuff we needed. I had actually purchased the cutters for a project I had done previous. The piping and joints were about 7 dollars for the whole project. I also purchased spray paint.<br />
In order to create this project you will need the following PVC:<br />
1/4 inch PVC pipe (make sure you have room to fit it in your car)<br />
2 corner joints<br />
4 T joints<br />
and 4 end caps.<br />
The basket, and the zip ties that attach the basket came from the dollar store. Then the O Rings were purchased at Walmart. <br />
<a href="http://firstgradeandfabulous.blogspot.com/2011/07/pvc-pipe.html">First Grade and Fabulous</a> gives a tutorial for a larger version.<br />
<br />
I have created the numbers for system, check them out on <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Now-Serving-Deli-Number-System-1574198">TpT</a>.<br />
Our students loved the system. They take a number from the basket and when they see that the sign says their number they come up and put their ticket back and get the help they need. Students have reported they like it because it give everyone a chance to get help from the teacher. I am also seeing students that wouldn't normally raise their hands or come up to me to ask for help take a number.<br />
<br />

I have been teaching my students to write narratives. Wow! They have some
great imaginations. It just takes a little bit to shape their great ideas into
stories. So far we've worked on Entertaining Beginnings and Elaborative
Details. <o:p></o:p><br />
<br />
I have two resources that I'm currently using to help me with this process:<o:p></o:p><br />
<br />
1. <u>The Most Wonderful Writing Lessons Ever</u>, By Barbara Mariconda.
This book goes step by step through the writing diamond and has helped me to get
great products out of my students.<o:p></o:p><br />
<br />
2. Empowering Writers <a href="http://empoweringwriters.com/"><span style="color: blue;">Website</span></a> is
an awesome resource too. Here they have a whole narrative writing program you
can buy... it is pricey for just one teacher - if you're school is willing to
purchase it, it might be worth looking into. However, there are many great resources
at the website that you can use that you do not have to pay for.<o:p></o:p><br />
<br />
Here is a link to my <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Narrative-Writing-Diamond" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">TpT</span></a> store for a freebie. I have typed up the writing diamond
so you can put it together on a poster board. Check out mine below:<o:p></o:p><br />

I recently (April) got a new cricut and haven't had the opportunity to use it! I decided that I'd try it out and was inspired by two pins on pinterest:<br />
<a href="http://familyfun.go.com/magazine/familyfun-magazine-archive/familyfun-march-2011/by-the-book-987289/">Disney Family Fun</a> and <a href="http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/family">Apartment Therapy</a><br />
<br />
I used my cricut to cut out my letters and then appliqued them onto the fabric. Then I turned those squares into pillows. I'm not going to give you a step by step tutorial, but I do have few tips.<br />
<br />
1. If you are like me, and you've seen applique and kinda know how to do it (but not really), you can look it up on You Tube! Search applique and watch a few videos, this will give you exactly what you need - even if you're not an expert!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigKQArPTTBrCY1NNFCF_E-10iouDC8kQfjUtw4kl4uO7faVZZqmiBiPVp_BETBiplHJbYmazC3evx1sqTcmjHnsteZ_7T721xPhfGLgw2uDumnmHYffB5DJZCVnllxPXb-xoGY4yVFlwQv/s1600/IMG_1553%255B1%255D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigKQArPTTBrCY1NNFCF_E-10iouDC8kQfjUtw4kl4uO7faVZZqmiBiPVp_BETBiplHJbYmazC3evx1sqTcmjHnsteZ_7T721xPhfGLgw2uDumnmHYffB5DJZCVnllxPXb-xoGY4yVFlwQv/s200/IMG_1553%255B1%255D.JPG" height="200" width="150" /></a></div>
2. Try out your zig-zag stitch with a few different sizes first. This way you'll know exactly what you want before you start. <br />

I can always remember my mom sewing with adding tape under her projects - I always wondered why? Now I know! If you put paper under the project it will hold the stitches so they don't pull your fabric, and it will look so much better. Not to mention it's also easier to sew it. The needle will poke so many holes in the paper you'll be able to pull the paper away afterward. (For some reason I felt the need to keep with my color theme and use a sheet of green paper)<br />
<br />
<br />
4. Have fun! I love the way these came out and I hope my kids will too!<br />
<br />
<br />
Here is a sneak peek of my room so far. As you can see I don't even have anything on my bulletin boards and nothing on my shelves... but I still have a few weeks! Thank goodness!<br />

Here is coat #4 and finally it is looking like it should. I also spray painted my baskets, which were many different colors. This was a much cheaper way to get a new color scheme. These are the eight that I have done. I can't wait to start putting my books in them and put my shelf back where it belongs. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Now onto the fun stuff! Over at <a href="http://peaceloveandfirstgrade.blogspot.com/2012/06/making-scrunchy-border.html?showComment=1340325908991">Peace Love And First Grade</a> I found the beautiful "scrunchy" border. Here is what Laura's looks like:<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkcih1HtSoOaVWZSaONwSwtM02KJ-CCIH4rbh3ImPV9jO2EMxm_kgvhDZJnYoEOfL84FHll2NVBK85cHqIIBAEqwwDoV2MfebBkezG2YOGOcjcNYmhlSyfV2WWAq5_sSuMyFGniOwLifWX/s1600/Slide8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" closure_uid_pecrqk="10" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkcih1HtSoOaVWZSaONwSwtM02KJ-CCIH4rbh3ImPV9jO2EMxm_kgvhDZJnYoEOfL84FHll2NVBK85cHqIIBAEqwwDoV2MfebBkezG2YOGOcjcNYmhlSyfV2WWAq5_sSuMyFGniOwLifWX/s400/Slide8.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a><br />
She used long strips of paper - you can find directions at the link above. <br />
Our paper supply at school is out (not sure if they'll be replacing it) and I still wanted to do this. So I got crepe paper. I started out using a single roll - but this didn't work out so well. So I did two rolls side by side and it seemed to work out well! Here are my results: <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiahqS0OMF2Vi940MAKnxf1zYsbpmiBLbYNb0rjEkMgJ5Ixvg6Ou7KC5jXS9h0XV32RS2wumHGNgnYml0WqnzmqtqC4kDs3-U7qJc6rFTUVfuEel2ercFqHmGc1mKI3KbMFnaEA5oSCaGjZ/s1600/IMG_1500%5B1%5D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiahqS0OMF2Vi940MAKnxf1zYsbpmiBLbYNb0rjEkMgJ5Ixvg6Ou7KC5jXS9h0XV32RS2wumHGNgnYml0WqnzmqtqC4kDs3-U7qJc6rFTUVfuEel2ercFqHmGc1mKI3KbMFnaEA5oSCaGjZ/s320/IMG_1500%5B1%5D.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is the first side - you can see how I have the two rolls side by side. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is the corner - the hardest part!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimgIEY8u2OATQFrXJ4plZ25IjuvQsz1LeCyHgfSU9D5EBtIdVBOxEXNswgm99sypDrI0JyM3UAaipAdOnm7Zz_jft3V4yW_wgK4CzkdA45fAZB_yehN7VswEWFVG29QZUhZJCK-9FQlo6v/s1600/IMG_1508%5B1%5D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimgIEY8u2OATQFrXJ4plZ25IjuvQsz1LeCyHgfSU9D5EBtIdVBOxEXNswgm99sypDrI0JyM3UAaipAdOnm7Zz_jft3V4yW_wgK4CzkdA45fAZB_yehN7VswEWFVG29QZUhZJCK-9FQlo6v/s320/IMG_1508%5B1%5D.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then, here is my final result. Yeah, I'm so proud. Thanks Laura for the great idea!!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is another great idea I found from pinterest that helped me with my bulletin boards. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I used green colored staples with the green crepe paper and blue staples on the blue paper. They are hidden so well, and so easy to make. All you have to do is color them with a permanent marker. </div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">First of all... I know it has been forever since I've written on my blog. I am going to try to be more faithful to it, and hopefully when school start I will have a routine in order.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So... I have been in my classroom... painting. I had a nasty bookshelf that I wanted to bring to life. Here it is with the first coat. You can see the original blue color has dings and scratches and just needs a little life.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8pkUvUrYA-nnY9dlKVhv3EOuOgFlj1V7NW-W40m4Zosb3djkGJX1RuBr6Vm1aZ9rpnL8SbtGXDoN3V7FqpkM-yGI1BNmXmaPRt6MaoApogW-b65SD8NR9uxZ6rweLN3Zz2tv9EfJ36sH2/s1600/IMG_1480%5B1%5D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8pkUvUrYA-nnY9dlKVhv3EOuOgFlj1V7NW-W40m4Zosb3djkGJX1RuBr6Vm1aZ9rpnL8SbtGXDoN3V7FqpkM-yGI1BNmXmaPRt6MaoApogW-b65SD8NR9uxZ6rweLN3Zz2tv9EfJ36sH2/s320/IMG_1480%5B1%5D.JPG" height="240" sca="true" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<div align="center" class="separator" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Sadly... painting is a whole lot harder than I imagined it to be. I don't do it often enough, and every time I do it I think it's going to be this magical, fun event. Yea.... no! This book shelf needed like 3 coats of paint. Here is the<s> final</s> last result. I still have some more paint so I am going to do one more coat.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXf_6lIFlnMv22axpeJWele3QtnDwVRafi0MorXNt7aS0L4pVnp1ktQKYfWfB_1iSFgRemMevisH6dDBP_a7F7B2KyEl3ZcPGP4tgx6Z2dXgsE8XUkE-ox7qO055FyWRfUIGoL6hfqvV-d/s1600/IMG_1487%5B1%5D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXf_6lIFlnMv22axpeJWele3QtnDwVRafi0MorXNt7aS0L4pVnp1ktQKYfWfB_1iSFgRemMevisH6dDBP_a7F7B2KyEl3ZcPGP4tgx6Z2dXgsE8XUkE-ox7qO055FyWRfUIGoL6hfqvV-d/s320/IMG_1487%5B1%5D.JPG" height="240" sca="true" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Like I said I think one more coat will make it look better. The back panel is made from plywood so the paint does not get into all the groves very easily. I'm not too worried about this because my book baskets will cover it up. The next shelf was only $5 at the Re-Store (Habitat for Humanity). I was so excited! It was really gross and needed to be cleaned up. I washed it down, took some of the hardware off and have plans to make a bench cushion for the top. (Like something I saw on Pinterest!) I love the color, and will post pictures when it's all set up!</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Okay, so here are my <span style="font-size: x-large;"><u><strong>Questions</strong></u></span> for you!</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong><span style="font-size: x-large;">1.</span></strong> I am currently reading the Daily 5 and I am trying to figure out how to incorporate it into a fifth grade classroom. I am looking for comments and resources from anyone who uses Daily 5/Cafe in the upper grades. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong><span style="font-size: x-large;">2.</span></strong> In the Daily 5 book, it mentions getting away from having a desk. Has anyone gotten rid of their desk? I am seriously considering it. I imagine all the space... and then I sit at my desk and look at all the little things on my desk. What do you do with all those things? Let me know if you've gotten rid of your desk, what do you use instead?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>

My students were so excited! The assignment: "Bring in something to represent a fraction." The results were so creative and it allowed me to see exactly what they knew about fraction numerators and denominators. Students had to present their "museum exhibit." Some had others guess their fractions, and others told why they chose the fraction they did. It was very successful!<br />
Here are some of the examples:<br />

<br />
My kiddos get excited about having their very own manipulatives so I've made them fun fraction bars. <br />
<br />
It's really easy!<br />
<br />
1. Find great paper from Hobby Lobby, or AC Moore or any local craft store:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_QzgndaZ4WdrALE6HFn-NwefUjma7nGzg14J8vVmNtE2uPjeRqFCQ8tLKVZJRINjhO4tKCL9_4bHk_OL4VvXyJIKNq2s9IruMxqmfGQdnjEIg06lxZIE8ufuBrhAygNKHZW1hOq2wbMck/s1600/frac.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_QzgndaZ4WdrALE6HFn-NwefUjma7nGzg14J8vVmNtE2uPjeRqFCQ8tLKVZJRINjhO4tKCL9_4bHk_OL4VvXyJIKNq2s9IruMxqmfGQdnjEIg06lxZIE8ufuBrhAygNKHZW1hOq2wbMck/s320/frac.JPG" height="320" nfa="true" width="240" /></a></div>
2. Photo copy a fraction bar template on the back or the fun papers, and laminate.<br />
3. Cut the fraction bars out.<br />

<br />
4. Finally, put them in a baggie and give them to your students.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6oOtjtR8KRjsuRY-XGXx1zHzWdUva1_TcViovsqK61Rw97OqXzzf7JepwQwGHxvePOCnOO6DoTDDBovUmy37AXepRNJ9UuZ_2ByGN-dzU0_KRbSBbbz4F0pSX9fEfOxyy3rZz1NS24Qbz/s1600/photo.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6oOtjtR8KRjsuRY-XGXx1zHzWdUva1_TcViovsqK61Rw97OqXzzf7JepwQwGHxvePOCnOO6DoTDDBovUmy37AXepRNJ9UuZ_2ByGN-dzU0_KRbSBbbz4F0pSX9fEfOxyy3rZz1NS24Qbz/s320/photo.JPG" height="320" nfa="true" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I let my students trade them. The only rule I gave them is that they have to trade the same denominators. Example: I'll give you 2/12 for 2/12. This way they will always have a complete set.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is a set of fraction bars that you can copy and paste into a word document. Once you have it in a word document you can re-size the picture to the size you would like it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Good Luck I hope your kids like them as much as mine do!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://www.mylivesignature.com/" target="_blank"><img src="http://signatures.mylivesignature.com/54489/243/1C41781ED6CD295C05D07E64FE4EF6D0.png" style="background: none transparent scroll repeat 0% 0%; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px;" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
P.S. I am adding one more resource!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also cut out <a href="http://donnayoung.org/math/fraction.htm">Fraction Pies</a> for each of my students. Then I hole punched each fraction circle and put them together with a piece of yarn. I like the ones at this link (click on Fraction Pies) because it also showed the students the written form of each fraction, the percent, and the decimal. Stay posted for some more ideas with fractions!</div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCBIVvFB-XXa5EDZTadrizQgA68N6G0akFOvOla3c0DORXPQrEJ5tsEGlYDjYjfyb7Hj2QWQVJ8OFHoxJmXlP63JBMBSJMcAetGhyphenhyphenATXRHr72UUNvnC87TqEpPdEK3JscE1fRoXXgyAhfY/s1600/multiplication.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCBIVvFB-XXa5EDZTadrizQgA68N6G0akFOvOla3c0DORXPQrEJ5tsEGlYDjYjfyb7Hj2QWQVJ8OFHoxJmXlP63JBMBSJMcAetGhyphenhyphenATXRHr72UUNvnC87TqEpPdEK3JscE1fRoXXgyAhfY/s320/multiplication.JPG" height="240" rea="true" width="320" /></a>I had to share these cool multiplication disks. </div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">
My students needed to practice their multiplication facts so I told them I would make them flash cards. However, to make flash cards for multiplication and division facts 1 through 12 for 17 children... well, that's a lot of paper. So I found these disks and they took far less time, and are so much cooler. My kiddo's loved them! You can even get your students in on the fun!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">
So here is how to make them: </div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">
SIDE ONE</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">
1. Cut out a circle.</div>
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">
2. Put 12 holes around the edge - I used a cool star punch.</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">
3. Put x ___ (the factor i.e. 1,2,3,4 etc...) in the middle.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvgtZxmamGHHZeBQ5fF7yyoeEETuOi_8Cg4x2hReE5a0JVBt0kcKuYye-Qs4n1ztxJTtPxaJnfmZ7Cd0HNoMku3Z0jugTwHMM2yXPgzYDzIaLT2isl4QphuXJl-shiYr6ZpXYEdCNQjIkU/s1600/6+back.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvgtZxmamGHHZeBQ5fF7yyoeEETuOi_8Cg4x2hReE5a0JVBt0kcKuYye-Qs4n1ztxJTtPxaJnfmZ7Cd0HNoMku3Z0jugTwHMM2yXPgzYDzIaLT2isl4QphuXJl-shiYr6ZpXYEdCNQjIkU/s320/6+back.JPG" height="320" rea="true" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">
4. Next to each hole write the numbers 1- 12 (I wrote mine random - because I wanted my students to practice them - you could also write them in order)</div>
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">
SIDE TWO</div>
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">
1. Write <span style="font-size: 16pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">÷ __<span style="font-size: small;"> <span style="font-family: Times;">(same factor as above)</span></span></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: 16pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><span style="font-family: Times; font-size: small;">2. Put your finger over the hole and figure out the problem from the other side. For example: If your factor in the middle is 6 and the hole you put your finger over is 7 (from the multiplication side) do 6 x 7. This equals 42 so write 42 on the hole. Do this for each number. If you provided the circles your students could do this and check it on a multiplication chart. The act of creating these could be it's own practice. </span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqWlM0wGWgxm0H1pXOYA5eaZCHMEPDvCebPJliydVhiFVMEIqUmws2zPG8PlRhE5r6jW-3s9x9VLx7WiGqCnMz6SqJKjVkECFcfvaSzcc2ORIypI1F8ChKwiZz75f9eifq6ognJ6Wd4ZxB/s1600/6+front.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; cssfloat: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqWlM0wGWgxm0H1pXOYA5eaZCHMEPDvCebPJliydVhiFVMEIqUmws2zPG8PlRhE5r6jW-3s9x9VLx7WiGqCnMz6SqJKjVkECFcfvaSzcc2ORIypI1F8ChKwiZz75f9eifq6ognJ6Wd4ZxB/s320/6+front.JPG" height="320" rea="true" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is an example of step two from above: 6 x 10 </div>
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">

Kudos to you who are supper bloggers! I don't know how you do it. I'm lucky to get one post in each week - as you can see. As hectic the start of the year has been, it has been a wonderful start. I have modeled my groups and the right way, as well as the wrong way, to work in stations and today was the first day that we practiced the whole thing. My kiddos did great. We had four stations... one was with me, another one was math match (a game like memory or concentration), there was as station where students rolled the biggest number and the last one was Mathulators! The kids loved these.<br />
I got the idea from <a href="http://4thgradefrolics.blogspot.com/2011/07/my-vocabulators.html">4th grade frolics</a> vocabulators. At her site she refers to <a href="http://www.melissaforney.com/drupal/node/342">Melissa Forney's</a> site where you can order the jars. This site used this idea with Language Arts... this didn't help me because I currently teach primarily math and science. So, I turned it into mathulators. Check out the pictures:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCtIFuTH4UfFyWCw-4iLH123sPpqGAPWIiYzQAsSgpvixJw8V_YHeMe4kylNz7efiT2AQVXXv0KCjS3HOT6Fr5Mxfn7g5XsyZ2b6eiSpdiphfhBGSYYoFtGEyUwZYDDw6phvWH1U0GHhXg/s1600/mathulators.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCtIFuTH4UfFyWCw-4iLH123sPpqGAPWIiYzQAsSgpvixJw8V_YHeMe4kylNz7efiT2AQVXXv0KCjS3HOT6Fr5Mxfn7g5XsyZ2b6eiSpdiphfhBGSYYoFtGEyUwZYDDw6phvWH1U0GHhXg/s320/mathulators.JPG" height="240" nba="true" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here are the two that I made. I wanted to find inexpensive ways to do this so I found two different containers at the dollar store. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglCsnlUDh18VBGL0UUgQnZ1UwlOt1qm7tJt_LkwzyKicX9PMb-kOhjXLo_Q-k6yvG6m5_dV1wU-nDyzbNJdg5RxlOY1sR4h5T3smfQrZ-zm3jrd90CtVwZXxUg_KFdGxzUtG5clCOFN7nP/s1600/nerds+mathulator.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglCsnlUDh18VBGL0UUgQnZ1UwlOt1qm7tJt_LkwzyKicX9PMb-kOhjXLo_Q-k6yvG6m5_dV1wU-nDyzbNJdg5RxlOY1sR4h5T3smfQrZ-zm3jrd90CtVwZXxUg_KFdGxzUtG5clCOFN7nP/s400/nerds+mathulator.JPG" height="400" nba="true" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This one is filled with Nerds - my kids all wanted to eat them. You can kinda see the words on the pink and blue paper. These are words to go with our first unit of place value and numeracy. Students had to find all the words and write them down. For my struggling readers this helps to work with the words.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqmAOErrKtZXBSB-VWgPqj_b0ZNTsjyEye5Im9mJ19ZXNc91HufqNMXe_NdBiakDroVMlg1rQB9xreQen1_KptEEditcv9HsTTdCc9VgRrYzsnoATJ53zWYAH7KZLzm_PVBwjiNUXsEAa9/s1600/stones+mathulator.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqmAOErrKtZXBSB-VWgPqj_b0ZNTsjyEye5Im9mJ19ZXNc91HufqNMXe_NdBiakDroVMlg1rQB9xreQen1_KptEEditcv9HsTTdCc9VgRrYzsnoATJ53zWYAH7KZLzm_PVBwjiNUXsEAa9/s320/stones+mathulator.JPG" height="320" nba="true" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This one is a little bigger. It has bath salts and stones in it, both came from the dollar store. Inside this one there are cards that say a + 6 = 9 and b x 8 = 40 and c... and so on. Students had to find the value of each letter. This was a great day and a successful activity. Hope your classrooms are having as much success!</div>

The first day of school started on Thursday. Thank goodness it was only Thursday and Friday because by Friday night I was exhausted. I have the sweetest group of kids this year and I am so excited. I am sad because on Monday we will start switching classes and I won't see them as much, but I'm also excited because I will get to see my math classes. <br />
<br />
Here is my room: <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7KMwygqsLBeM7PpVTHrtNlDzdWq56eIQby2AxS1vwXERjIYhkM661pS_jOlg-2d8v6tchgBYTthQqF6u0WkX_pSVu1P54mPDhSmShmYVA_TzGcFUmpU8rV6WviJdd9qQ1QQHruKwDUNBA/s1600/DSC_0147.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7KMwygqsLBeM7PpVTHrtNlDzdWq56eIQby2AxS1vwXERjIYhkM661pS_jOlg-2d8v6tchgBYTthQqF6u0WkX_pSVu1P54mPDhSmShmYVA_TzGcFUmpU8rV6WviJdd9qQ1QQHruKwDUNBA/s320/DSC_0147.JPG" height="213" qaa="true" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is my I Wonder Board. On the first day students put things that they are curious about on a post it and stuck it to the board. Each Wednesday we are going to discover a new "Wonder." They were very creative in their ideas. I can't wait to learn and discover with them. </div>

Here is my library... a work in progress. I am still organizing and changing it as we speak. By December I hope to have it label and sorted by genre. I also want to put labels in every book that allow students to see different levels.</div>

Here is my science board. This is where I put posters and other information relevant to our science curriculum. I found this great shiny paper at the dollar store. I thought it went really well with the peacock boarder.<br />

That's my classroom.<br />
<br />
As far as Scholastic Book Orders are concerned I wanted to let everyone know that you can set this up for parent ordering online. You all probably already knew this, but it if you didn't it is super easy and so much less hassle. Go and sign up on scholastic website, it is self explanatory. I have already had two parents order online and it's so nice. I only have to pass the books out when they come. I don't have to deal with any money or slips. Check it out, it's well worth signing up.<br />
<br />
Hope you all have a great week. <br />

I can't believe that we go back to our first work day tomorrow. My classroom is pretty much ready because I've been in this summer. <br />
<br />
<br />
I didn't go in today... I enjoyed the day with my husband! But I have started a few projects:<br />
<br />
1. Found these on Pinterest as well as other blogs: Clipboards. I have chosen to decoupage the back of my clipboards in hopes that I can identify which ones are mine and hopefully have more at the end of the year! Yes I am doing all 25 clipboard this way... but I'm only doing the back. I've cut out all the papers I need and am ready to Modge Podge. I have done a couple already. If you're interested in trying this project, I suggest heavy paper and patience. If you do use lighter weight paper put the first coat of modge podge on the clip board, glue the paper down and let it sit. Then put your second coat on the paper and clipboard -- this will help it not bulge and wrinkle. Here is my project in the works.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiX-_aItc15ZAT-AdOAUHIMZ6_GJa9uz1BFhyzfOZHZmnqvbxK947eUa2BGMl8mrKik4KeriBT11T9OBwe3HjmpYb-c4-y4rpjFjKJ12N9YWU9LHG72SlGAszQXIwN3hi-vzaG9x2YjgQoW/s1600/clipboards.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiX-_aItc15ZAT-AdOAUHIMZ6_GJa9uz1BFhyzfOZHZmnqvbxK947eUa2BGMl8mrKik4KeriBT11T9OBwe3HjmpYb-c4-y4rpjFjKJ12N9YWU9LHG72SlGAszQXIwN3hi-vzaG9x2YjgQoW/s320/clipboards.JPG" height="240" qaa="true" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
2. This is my target find.... and an idea I've seen on many blogs I found these cute little boxes at Target in the dollar section. Then I created pictures in paint. I love this idea because my kiddos always take forever to get a pencil if they are missing one. I always had a pencil box but not a sharpen and un-sharpened, hopefully this will help students get a pencil quickly. I also made it one of my student jobs to sharpen pencils each day. I love it!</div>

I loved the humor in her top ten... you have to check it out! I was laughing out loud as I related to each item on her top ten list.<br />
Here is my Top Ten Reasons I know it is Back to School Time:<br />
<span style="color: red;">10 - I am actually excited about routine. I am looking forward to long days and getting up in the morning!</span> <span style="color: red;">You know this is because I have exhausted my summer activities.</span><br />
<span style="color: orange;">9 - I have shopped, and shopped, and am still looking for little things to use in my classroom.</span><br />
<span style="color: yellow;">8 - Not only do I shop, but I pick up things and think that is so cute how can I use it in my classroom.</span><br />
<span style="color: #274e13;">7 - I'm training myself to go to bed early and wake up early.</span><br />
<span style="color: #3d85c6;">6 - I am making sure that all loose ends are tied up... during the year the bank is closed or it's hard to make</span> <span style="color: #3d85c6;">phone calls if you need to.</span><br />
<span style="color: #674ea7;">5 - My classroom is full of a new year energy - I'm excited and full of ideas.</span><br />
<span style="color: #741b47;">4 - Bulletin Boards are new!</span><br />
<span style="color: red;">3 - My classroom is actually clean and organized and everything is put away in it's very own spot.</span><br />
<span style="color: orange;">2 - My todo list is very long and growing longer.</span><br />
<span style="color: #351c75;">And the number one reason that I know it's back to school time....</span><br />
<span style="color: #351c75;">I've been in my classroom as much as I can for the last two weeks. </span><br />
<a href="http://www.mylivesignature.com/" target="_blank"><img src="http://signatures.mylivesignature.com/54489/243/1C41781ED6CD295C05D07E64FE4EF6D0.png" style="background: none transparent scroll repeat 0% 0%; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px;" /></a>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8735872928737974254.post-88165475363433796412011-08-07T16:55:00.000-07:002014-04-23T14:52:37.115-07:00Hands-On Math Linking PartyI loved this linking party. I am so excited about teaching math this year, especially since it's part of my graduate degree work! <br />
<br />
The linking party question over at <a href="http://love4thgrade.blogspot.com/2011/08/linky-party-how-do-you-make-math-hands.html">Jasztalville: Where Inquiry and Creativity Rules</a> is How do you make math hands on? <br />
<br />
I love to provide games to reinforce skills. Check out an earlier post Games, Games, Games. I also was intrigued by <a href="http://4thgradefrolics.blogspot.com/2011/07/my-vocabulators.html">4th Grade Frolics</a> vocabulators. I have put a little spin on these to work with my math units. I will post this as soon as I've got them finished.<br />
<br />
Lastly, to make math "hands-on" we do a lot of moving. I play Simon-Says with geometry concepts, work in stations, and sing songs. You can find many great videos to go with math songs on YouTube! We have a lot of fun! <br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh31C8VnDFXmHCNUu7xFDCGrjVyysglCVOMXg30BPJh-GgOkfExQezoPYz3e4yJ8oXpOVr4hv2ARnvyS5Kjm0gcTgrEEGeTGewJ9MDueh-jVJ3kij4_xtOiPheYyGj_SKg5FpE9lnx5kb5X/s1600/advice.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh31C8VnDFXmHCNUu7xFDCGrjVyysglCVOMXg30BPJh-GgOkfExQezoPYz3e4yJ8oXpOVr4hv2ARnvyS5Kjm0gcTgrEEGeTGewJ9MDueh-jVJ3kij4_xtOiPheYyGj_SKg5FpE9lnx5kb5X/s320/advice.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a><br />
I loved this idea because the first year you're teaching you need all the help that you can get. Plus, I was so fortunate to have the BEST help ever, and the most caring teachers to work with, so I'd like to pass that on. I think it is also important as veteran teachers to read through different teachers thoughts and ideas and advice. It allows us to reflect on our practice and gives us a few reminders that we sometimes need. So, here it is my advice for new teachers:<br />
<span style="background-color: #6aa84f; color: #351c75;">1. Make sure you are having fun everyday - I love waking up in the morning and thinking "Yeah, I get to go to school today!"</span><br />
<span style="color: #bf9000;">2. Don't take too much home... yes, you may have to do some at home... but remember you need to rejuvenate too!</span><br />
<span style="color: #990000;">3. REFLECT! Think about your lessons, your students and yourself. What went well? What could I do differently?</span><br />
<span style="color: #3d85c6;">4. (This one comes after going to graduate school the last year and a half) Remember, everywhere, every school is going through something similar to what you're going through.</span><br />
<span style="color: magenta;">5. Don't listen to what others say about your kiddos coming in. Keep a fresh slate and they will surprise you, and if you want advice about students go later after you've met them.</span><br />
<span style="color: purple;">6. Beg, Borrow and Steal - from everywhere! Internet, non-educators, students, teachers, etc...</span><br />
<br />

Also, I wanted to thanks Tamara from <a href="http://www.teachingblogaddict.com/">TBA</a> for the shout out! I am new to blogging and have enjoyed getting 15 followers this week and I know it's all because of her shout out. I am going to enjoy this community and think it will be a great addition to what I already do as a teacher. I should have known that this would be a wonderful place due to the fact that it's made up of wonderful teachers!</div>

</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I went into school today, which is nothing new, I've been in there a few times the last few weeks. We have about two weeks before we start and I'd rather mosey in later in the day and enjoy that "getting ready time," rather than be running around when we have meetings and other things going on. My classroom is almost set, despite a few planning things and writing names on things. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The best part of my day was meeting a colleague that works in a school across the county. She wanted to see how I did centers in my math class. I was excited to share, but it was also exciting to get her great ideas as well. As a teacher I wish we had more time to do this, I guess that is what blogs are for!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Anyway, I wanted to share some of the things that I did today:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguWOzzEdlP8_mp2sTvoSedRlO8sCN45io9OXawfhY7aoNNY4I_QSVSsUqhhMGKHLYAgXMwKhlkQRZUainoBQmYdy2trGiX2HaNigfmn26BsZ5-AzOXaZxNQryZ3iyW0qaait7GLtOfTQ_n/s1600/chair.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguWOzzEdlP8_mp2sTvoSedRlO8sCN45io9OXawfhY7aoNNY4I_QSVSsUqhhMGKHLYAgXMwKhlkQRZUainoBQmYdy2trGiX2HaNigfmn26BsZ5-AzOXaZxNQryZ3iyW0qaait7GLtOfTQ_n/s320/chair.JPG" height="320" t="" true="" width="240" /></a>This is a chair that I had from a previous year but it was all ripped up. I recovered it, I am pretty proud of it! </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhervNEyYw8eC5qH9gfIunvIBNUeHfymVRjvITXUrB1K91gT271-oPwu1B5a2s4qjpHonRl5fdvbW_qJRmpuzvSN96ps15Uf21SG1Swyc1GQ7zoOFHvuwdmtTAZW6AR6yoXWHNDmbIlRxxS/s1600/penspencils.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhervNEyYw8eC5qH9gfIunvIBNUeHfymVRjvITXUrB1K91gT271-oPwu1B5a2s4qjpHonRl5fdvbW_qJRmpuzvSN96ps15Uf21SG1Swyc1GQ7zoOFHvuwdmtTAZW6AR6yoXWHNDmbIlRxxS/s320/penspencils.JPG" height="240" t="" true="" width="320" /></a>These came from Target. One of the blogs I had read (if it's you take credit) went shopping at Target in the $1 section. I usually don't think about Target in my school shopping, but this was a great find. The buckets were $1 each and the stickers were a $1. Total cost of this adorable little holders $3! </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I use these clips for attendance, and drawing names for different things. I still have to write their names on them, but this year I added a fun pom-pom!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Hope everyone is enjoying those moments in their classroom before the students get there!</div>
